Florian Moitzi

Florian Moitzi (born 1979 in Linz) is an Austrian composer, arranger, saxophonist, and educator. His compositional work focuses on pieces for symphonic wind orchestra, but he also writes music for choir, orchestra, big band, and various ensembles.

His musical training began with flute, clarinet, and piano. Later, he studied jazz saxophone at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz with Harry Sokal, Gerald Preinfalk, and Florian Bramböck. As a saxophonist, he has collaborated with artists such as Alfons Haider, Bill Ramsey, Ray Anderson, Joseph Bowie, Heinz von Hermann, and Eric Papilaya. He received formative inspiration for his compositional work from Christoph Cech and through workshops with Otto M. Schwarz, Thomas Doss, Ed de Boer, and Klemens Vereno.
As youth leader and deputy bandmaster of the Scharnstein Redtenbacher town band, Moitzi began to compose more intensively for wind orchestras. His works are now published by various music publishers and performed by orchestras both in Germany and abroad. Several of his compositions have won awards at competitions and have been selected as required pieces or pieces for wind orchestra competitions.

Among his major current projects is the "Missa Caelestis" for eight-part mixed choir and symphonic wind orchestra. The approximately 45-minute work premiered in Linz in 2025 and was published by OrchestralArt in 2026. His wind orchestra works are also gaining increasing international recognition; compositions by Florian Moitzi are distributed by, among others, the Dutch publisher Tierolff and, in the USA, by JW Pepper.
In addition to his work as a composer, Florian Moitzi is a professor of music at the University of Teacher Education Upper Austria. There, he focuses particularly on music education, music didactics, and the training of future teachers. He is also an author in the field of education and co-author of "Zahlenreise" (Number Journey), an Austrian mathematics textbook for primary schools, as well as numerous supplementary teaching materials.
